Soap Opera’s Formula For A Doomed Relationship
People think “oh Soaps, it’s all drama”. Yes it is but what they don’t realize is, there’s a science to it also. There’s always an experiment going on year after year after year. Sometimes it doesn’t work, sometimes it does. And one of the things that work is the formula for a doomed relationship.
It’s not when someone slept with another person other than their partner, respectively. Nope. See, that’s part of the experimentation process. Someone will sleep with another person, either in the brink of death or just plain stupidity. Sometimes they’re forgiven and life goes on, sometimes not. But most of the times, it will be forgotten and forgiven.

There are 3 things you need :
1. A character who wouldn’t shut up about how happy she/he is. How in love she is. How she has been given a second chance to experience this undying love towards someone. She doesn’t care what happened last year. She has forgiven her mate for sleeping with someone else, let alone her BFF. How stupid can she be for even thinking of letting him go.
2. A character who wouldn’t shut up about how ironic it is that an ex saved her life. The the ex-hubby pretended to be THE hubby so he could tag along in the ambulance ride. How of all people, it’s him to rescue her to have another chance in life.
3. A character who actually used to be a decent, strong human being turned pathetic, desperate and psychotic. All in the name of keeping a Man. This character will start with one lie, and then another, then another. By the time she realizes it, she’s way too deep and just committed a murder to keep everything from spilling out.
If you add all these ingredients together, you’ll get the result of a classic soaps doomed relationship from the start. When you encounter #1, that’s usually a tell tale sign that whoever she’s babbling about won’t be the one she’ll end up with. #3 on the other hand will do anything, like try to get pregnant without the Father knowing it. When a second rate character has done so many bad things that the writers don’t know how to redeem her/him, that’s sign that she is either going to jail, have a miscarriage, get divorce so #1 could live happily ever after with the ex. Or die. Hence #3 Actor is probably in danger of getting fired.
This my friends how Soap Opera Formula works. BUT, because of blogs like Soaps On ABC, and fans knowing too much, writers will change things a bit to throw us off and disprove everything that we have predicted. But we know better :).
And they said Einstein is the smartest person in the world……. ;)
