Soaps Alumni : Vanessa Marcil As Brenda Barrett

Before Vanessa Marcil started giving fellow soaps alumni Josh Duhamel(Leo, AMC) and other hotties in the NBC Primetime show Las Vegas a run for their money as Samantha “Sam” Jane, she was Brenda Barrett on General Hospital. She was the feisty model who made the mob-boss Sonny Corinthos swoon and Jasper Jax’s hearts beat a million times. Of course it made Carly shake in her little booties then. It still does. Vanessa Marcil started playing Brenda Barrett on 1992. Vanessa was nominated for Emmy’s Outstanding Supporting Actress on 1998 and 1997. Sadly, she lost, oh well. She left in 1998 to pursue primetime and portrayed Gina Kincaid, a former ice skating champion, “cousin” of Donna Martin, who turned out to be her half-sister in Beverly Hills 90210. She went back to play Brenda Barrett, with the delight of her fans like myself in the Fall of 2002. She bagged the Emmy’s Outstanding Supporting Actress in 2003. She also won Soap Opera Digest Favorite Return Award on the same year. Previous Soap Opera Digest Awards are : Outstanding Lead Actress(1998) and Hottest Female Star(1997). After that short return in 2003, she left Port Charles and is now breaking millions of hearts and making rich gambling idiots spend more money at the fictional casino called Montecito in the show Las Vegas.

Fans, including yours truly is still clamoring for Brenda to return. BUT, the show’s Power-That-Be knows it’s going to be hard to re-cast the character. Vanessa Marcil made such an impact on portraying Brenda Barrett that even though fans want Brenda to come back to give Carly and the rest of those mobsters dude a run for their money, we all know deep in our hearts that Vanessa Marcil IS Brenda Barrett.

Did you know Brenda Barrett was also married to Jason? Granted it was only a marriage of convenience. I think TPTB wanted to preserve the fact the Brenda and Sonny connection by not pursuing a real relationship between Jason and Brenda. I think it would’ve been hot. Anyhoo, so see, Carly is not the only one who has connections to the 3 leading Men(Sonny, Jax, Jason) in Port Charles. Brenda is someone Sonny will always love which is why he was smitten by Sam in the first place. Sam McCall kinda look like Brenda . Wouldn’t it be ironic if Brenda is Sam’s sister. What a way to boost Sonny’s ego. Not only did he do Alexis, and Sam(mother and daughter), he has also done Sam’s sister, Brenda. Interestingly enough, Sam had been with Jax, Sonny and Jason. Talk about a twist.

Vanessa Marcil is having fun in Primetime and I wish her luck and is always rooting for her coz she is a great actress. So unless Alyssa Milano agrees to be a recast for a very popular character, Brenda Barrett will remain somewhere wherever she is right now.
